Why New NIST Guidelines Point to Blockchain-Powered AI Governance as Preferred Option

The recent release of the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) guidance documents like the NIST 600-1 Risk Management Framework (RMF) Playbook for Gen AI, validate Prove AI’s vision that blockchain is uniquely suited to power AI governance applications, thanks to its immutable and tamper-proof nature. The document highlights blockchain’s vital role in enhancing AI governance by improving transparency, content tracking, and immutability. This recognition validates our belief that blockchain, particularly through cryptographic hashes, is one of the more efficient ways to ensure AI systems and underlying data can be secured and trustworthy for users. We are excited to have our vision validated, but this is just the start as we look to launch Prove AI. Leveraging Blockchain for Enhanced AI Governance

According to NIST, a world-trusted authority in technology standards, blockchain technology and its inherent ability to provide tamper-proof AI data provenance is recognized as a key technology to administer AI governance in the age of generative AI. NIST 600-1 specifies:

The draft was then later edited and updated to be more inclusive and broadening. The general concept of using tamper-proof technology to help properly manage inherent AI model, data, and provenance risks using blockchain-based technology was considered by NIST as a very viable method.

Unpacking NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework

NIST’s new AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) provides essential guidance for managing the risks associated with AI technologies. NIST 600-1 is a cross-sectoral profile of and companion resource for the AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0) for Generative AI and is pursuant to President Biden’s Executive Order (EO) 14110 on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence. At Prove AI, we are fully aligned with these recommendations, ensuring our recently announced platform, Prove AI, is designed with robust risk management practices. The document offers insights into how risk can be managed across various stages of the AI lifecycle and for generative AI as a technology category. The AI RMF identifies almost 50 key risk subcategories and offers over 400 actions for mitigating these risks, providing a comprehensive roadmap for AI governance.

Our approach involved integrating these risk management principles into our Prove AI development lifecycle. By doing so, we proactively address potential issues related to data privacy, data provenance, AI model management, multi-party AI governance, and generative AI model output vulnerabilities. This alignment with NIST’s framework not only enhances the reliability of Prove AI but also ensures compliance with trusted global guidelines.

NIST’s new guidance also includes specific measures for managing the risks associated with generative AI technologies, such as chatbots and AI-based content creation tools. These technologies have transformative potential but also pose unique challenges.
